Playing Experience

High School: Evanston Juniors 1984 to 1988

  • At that time, boy’s volleyball basically didn’t exist in Illinois, so we played against men year-round…which in hindsight sure helped us progress quickly.
  • 1987 we won AAU’s boys’ 17-under
  • 1987 we took 3rd place at USVBA Junior Nationals
  • 1988 we won AAU’s boys’ 17-under, and boys’ 19-under
  • 1988 we took 5th place at USVBA Junior Nationals

College:  Penn State 1988 to 1992

  • 1989, 1991, and 1992 we went to the Final Four
  • Each of those years we lost the semi-final match and then won the consolation round (3rd place overall)
  • In 1991 I made the US Olympic Festival (in Minneapolis that year)…the big news at that event was some huge men’s basketball player with a name I’d never heard before “Shaquille”

Post college:  Played one year at the Open level and decided the last 8 years of year-round volleyball was all I had in the tank.

Coaching Experience

In college I volunteer coached H.S. boys, 15-under team.   I believe that was 1990 (+/-) a year.

Post-college:  coached a girl’s H.S. beach volleyball class the summer of 1992.

2018: was the head coach of boys 7th grade volleyball team at St. Joseph school, in Wilmette IL.   The boys competed in a league primarily made up of 8th grade boys.   Only one guy on the squad had ever been exposed to the sport before.  They finished above .500 for the season.   A good experience for all involved.

Why I coach

While I’ve been away from the sport for a while, I found that in coaching my son in 2018 and now teaching my daughter the basics, that my love of the game hasn’t ever diminished.  I fell in love with the game originally because of the beauty of the sport, and more importantly the level of teamwork that is needed to succeed.

I coach because I believe it is one of the greatest sports for young people.  It provides them the opportunity to learn how to push their own boundaries (all of the skills have to be learned from square one and they are so disparate) and how to thrive in a team environment.
